Our Technology

Airbags have been used to save lives in motor vehicles. They have recently been used in a belt to save peoples hips. Our idea is to put airbags in pants so the person wearing the pants will be safe from a hip fracture as a result from a fall, but they would still feel comfortable.

Micro Airbags

For our pants, we will place micro airbags. These airbags will be made using  Vacuum Folding Technology (VFT). VFT is a method of folding the airbag, then compressing it into a small space. This can reduce the size of the airbag by 50 percent.

Pants

Our pants need to be comfortable. Our pants will be made of polyester and microfiber fabric. These fabrics will allow the person wearing the pants to move freely and feel comfortable, and safely.

Accelerometer

The pants need to track how fast the person is moving in order to deploy the airbags in time. This is where the accelerometer will be important. The accelerometer will track the speed of the person moving and will deploy if it senses the person is moving too fast, such as in a fall.

Gyroscope

The pants need to be able to track the direction of the person. This is where the gyroscope becomes important. The gyroscope will sense if the person is moving downwards. The gyroscope works together with the accelerometer to detect the direction and the speed of a falling person.
